There are 88 officially recognized constellations in the night sky, a number established by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1928 and published in 1930. These constellations divide the entire celestial sphere into 88 defined regions, serving as a map for astronomers. Many of these constellations are derived from ancient mythologies and patterns of stars as viewed from Earth. The 88 constellations depict 42 animals, 29 inanimate objects, and 17 humans or mythological characters. Of these 88 constellations 13 are located on the ecliptic - the orbital plane that the earth takes around the sun - yet only 12 of these are recognised in traditional astrology circles as zodiac signs and used by both tropical and sidereal astrologers alike. Saturday, August 23 saw a new moon at the very start of Virgo (conjunct the sun at 0 degrees) and consequently this means that the next new moon in 29 days time will also be in Virgo (at 29 degrees). This is known as a seasonal black moon - a rare new moon that happens only once every 33 months. In between the two new moons the Pisces full moon on September 7 will also be a total lunar eclipse visible over the UK and appearing as a "Blood Moon" as it rises above the horizon. The Moon will begin to enter the darkest part of Earth's shadow, the umbra, around 7:23 pm BST, with totality lasting until approximately 9:55 pm BST. After a day of preparation for the full moon post tomorrow I thought a light-hearted entry would be a good way to end the day. For those who are unaware, plans are well advanced for a modern day 'Concorde' known as the Boom Overture. As a regular listener to one of the three Boom radio stations for my generation I had the nostalgic notion of tying in the catchphrase of Basil Brush with the aircraft and the radio station. Not wishing to use the logo of the latter, the image with Basil Brush appearing to be skydiving alongside the two generations of supersonic aircraft, the latest having a much quieter boom, even inaudible, as it passes through the sound barrier.
